Domain Registry of America (DROA) Domain Renewal Scam
A company called Domain Registry of America is known to mail and email customers (not their own) with deceptive messages about domain transfers. The apparent goal of the letters is to trick the addressees into transfering their domain names away from their true registry, to Domain Registry of America. They falsely claim to be in response to a transfer request made by the customer. Another organization, the "Domain Support Group," calls clients (also not their own) and offers to renew their domain name, requesting credit card info. Anyone should naturally be very leary of this approach, since credit card info should never be given over the phone unless you are 100% certain who it is that is calling. Beyond that, the whole thing is a scam in which they too are attempting to "steal" domain registrations from the legitimate registrar.
If you receive a letter, email or phone call from the Domain Registry of America or the Domain Support Group, and feel that they have acted deceptively, please make your feelings known by writing to the Federal Trade Commission and/or your local Consumer Protection Office. Whatever you do, before you transfer your domain registration to them, check your records to be sure what company actually is the registrar!
